Dear Manager

Following the release of your Arthur-Pieman Conservation Area Sustainable Recreational Vehicle Access Draft Report 2010 there was widespread public concern. This concern was expressed at a public meeting held at Smithton on 18 MAy 2010.

During the meeting the Save Our Heritage group was formed with the purpose of responding to your invitation to 'Have Your Say".

During the meeting a Leadership Group was formed with the intention of preparing a submission to meet your guidelines and further to open dialogue with Government and its agency.

I was appointed convener of the Leadership Group.

It is with pleasure that we present our submission and with optimism that we seek further discussion in the hope that Government, Parks Management and various user groups can build bridges to the future.

The submission attached is intended to reflect the will of the Circular Head Community and its preparation has been paid for by the Circular Head people.

I advise that a wide range of interested users from across the state have been consulted and have rallied behind the Save Our Heritage Group.

Included in this submission are letters of support from significant User Groups and a list of statements gathered at short notice from supportive people.

The list is not and is not meant to be exhaustive. It is however indicative of the wide range of user groups who claim cultural links to the land and places within the Arthur-Pieman Conservation Area.

We trust that we can work co-operatively towards a consensus outcome that will underpin the sustainable management of the conservation area.

Yours faithfully,

Tony Fletcher

Convenor

Save Our Heritage Group

"The members of the Circular Head Aboriginal community are committed to nurturing and protecting what remains of the ancient culture situated in the Arthur Pieman area.

We are, however, of the belief that all in the community should respect the special attachments of others and we understand that non-indigenous people also have cultural links to that area".

Extra time for Arthur-Pieman track input

Posted Wed May 5, 2010 10:00am AEST

The Tasmanian Government has extended the deadline for feedback on its plan to restrict off-road vehicle access in the Arthur-Pieman Conservation Area, in north-west Tasmania.

The Parks and Wildlife report recommends closing several four-wheel drive tracks to limit the damage to Aboriginal heritage sites and sensitive vegetation.

Recreational vehicle users are unhappy about the plan, while environmentalists say it does not go far enough.

The new Minister for Environment, Parks and Heritage, David O'Byrne, says he has decided to extend the consultation period by a month because of the large amount of feedback he has received.

Comments will now be received until Friday June 4.
